Tree Planting Activity Strengthens Environmental Advocacy at Dr. Victoria B. Roman MHS

Dr. Victoria B. Roman Memorial High School held a massive tree planting activity on its ground and other surrounding communities in Pantingan, Liyang, Diwa, Tanato, and Cabog-cabog from October 7-18, 2024. Angelo R. Basilio, Monnette M. Bartolo, and Alijah Louise D. Dalde initiated this campaign driven by school proponents.

Tree planting

Activity focused on both fruit-bearing and forest trees, through generous donations from the Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan (AFAB) and the Department of Agriculture. AFAB donated an impressive 1,000 seedlings of Eucalyptus while the Department of Agriculture contributed 90 seedlings of various fruit and forest trees. These contributions go for making the project a success in helping to increase greenery across the school and neighbor communities.

Tree planting is a project that falls under the environment, but the above activity is more than that. It is partnership between the school and local government and various stakeholders, where the public eye shows how partnership can solve an environmental concern. The participation of the students, faculty, local residents, and external donors emphasizes community involvement in environment conservation.

With programs running through scattered locations, the project even benefited the greater community, the students of Dr. Victoria B. Roman MHS, and the people in the communities of Pantingan, Liyang, Diwa, Tanato, and Cabog-cabog. It showed participation by the community, thus making this activity a model example of people's collective action for environmental protection.

This tree planting will be part of the school's on-going Project CULTIVATE that aims to enhance environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and feeding programs with its Gulayan sa Paaralan project. These newly planted trees will help restore the environment through cleaner air, biodiversity near the locality, and preventing soil erosion in such communities.

Tree planting

Eucalyptus trees will be planted, due to their fast growth and sustainability in giving timber. The fruit-bearing trees, once they mature, will contribute not only as a source of nutrition but also strengthen the school's efforts in food sustainability.

As the trees grow, they will be checked annually to ensure that the project will really be sustainable in the long run. The success of the event, therefore, opens the way for more environmental activities and community participation as a shared responsibility for the care of nature.

Environmental advocacy continues to be the vision of Dr. Victoria B. Roman MHS for a greener, more sustainable future for its students and the communities it serves.

"Kaya 'Yan, Kaya Pa, Meron Pa"

KAYA 'YAN. To those who feel they are not enough. Even though you may feel that school is a burden at times, it never will be. It could be difficult, but you can never lose. Even though you may have failed, the knowledge you gained qualifies as a win. There is no such thing as impossible, thus you can accomplish it; basta, have faith in yourself.

KAYA PA. To those who lack motivation due to stress. Try being a carabao, an ant, or a somebody as resilient as the Great Wall. However, you can also adopt the attitude of a slothful panda or a koala who spends most of its time sleeping; neutrality. Make sure you complete everything on your to-do list. But, remember to take breaks and give yourself a chance to breathe.

MERON PA. To those who missed their chance. Did you miss your chance? Give it up. Hold off until you find another that truly suits your feet. Perhaps there are certain things that don't go with how unique you are. There are some individuals who do not excel in academics, but they are good in fixing things. There are some individuals who are not good in Math but good in writing; we are all different; unique.

"School is not the finish line nor the standards on how good a person is."

Superheroes Without Capes

In the hallway buzzing with students' lively chatter, a person moves with purpose, making their way to their next destination. They ignite minds, impart knowledge, and inspire. But the catch is, this isn't any ordinary person — this person is our teacher.

It makes you wonder if teachers possess power — not the kind that shoots lasers from their eyes or uses telekinesis to make things float. It's the power to educate with dedication while torn between work demands and personal needs. That’s why I've always defined teachers as superheroes with unique abilities.

From balancing the demands of their careers to the needs of their domestic duties, our educators face a whirlwind of tasks. Yet somehow, they wear a radiant smile, enough to light up our classroom with joy and positivity. It is a juggling act to keep students from sinking while barely staying afloat, yet by some means, they do it so effortlessly.

Like any other ordinary person, they experience tiredness, face uncertainties, and deal with hardships. But what makes our educators stand out is not only their power to balance multiple aspects of their lives, but also the power of hope they symbolize. They represent the hope that despite the hurdles, in every mind they touch, they prepare students to face the chaotic world.

Their dedication truly shines when they impart knowledge. I have experienced teachers who make solving problems understandable, learning new things enjoyable, and the overall school experience something to look forward to.

They spend countless hours preparing fun and interactive lessons, grading our papers, and still, they remember little things about us — our hobbies, our interests, and even the struggles we've encountered.

They say all superheroes wear capes, but in all honesty, some just teach.

National Learning Camp 2024: A New Chapter in Learning Recovery

National Learning Camp 2024: A New Chapter in Learning Recovery
In an effort to combat learning loss and improve educational outcomes, the Department of Education (DepEd) is set to roll out the National Learning Camp (NLC) from July 1 to 19, 2024. This initiative is part of the MATATAG Basic Education Agenda and falls under the broader National Learning Recovery Program (NLRP), designed to address the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Structure of the Camp

The NLC will begin with two days dedicated to teacher and administrative collaboration and reflection on day 1 and day 5. These sessions are crucial for aligning the camp's objectives, sharing best practices, and ensuring a unified approach to teaching and learning.

From day 2 to day 4, the focus will shift to active teaching and learning. During these days, students will engage in a variety of educational activities designed to enhance their understanding and skills in key subject areas. To support students' well-being and remove barriers to participation, the school will provide lunch for all attendees.

The NLC is a voluntary program that targets Grades 7 to 10, focusing on English, Science, and Mathematics. However, the camp's design is flexible, allowing schools to conduct other End-of-School Year (EOSY) break activities, such as Reading and Mathematics programs for Grades 1 to 3 and enrichment activities for other grade levels. This phased implementation ensures that learning recovery efforts are tailored to the specific needs of students across different grades.

Three Camps, One Goal

Based on individual learning needs, students will be enrolled in one of three camps:

  • Enhancement Camp: For students who are performing at grade level and seek to deepen their knowledge and skills.
  • Consolidation Camp: For students who need to reinforce their understanding of previously covered material.
  • Intervention Camp: For students who require additional support to meet grade-level expectations.

The NLC aims to create a camp-like atmosphere, integrating fun and engaging activities that foster learner interests, socio-emotional skills, personal growth, and character development.

Teacher participation in the NLC is voluntary. Recognizing the additional effort required, DepEd will provide vacation service credits, certificates of recognition, and other incentives to participating teachers, subject to the availability of funds and guidelines. These measures aim to acknowledge and reward the dedication of educators who contribute to the success of the camp.

Collaborative Expertise

One of the unique features of the NLC is its emphasis on collaborative expertise. In addition to direct teacher-learner engagement, the camp will include Learning Action Cell (LAC) sessions. These sessions, scheduled for two days each week, provide a platform for teachers to share insights, strategies, and support each other in improving instructional practices.

The school welcomes the involvement of both internal and external stakeholders to ensure the success of the National Learning Camp. Collaborative efforts from parents, community members, and educational partners are essential to create a supportive environment that promotes effective learning and recovery.

The National Learning Camp 2024 represents a significant step forward in addressing learning loss and enhancing educational outcomes. By fostering a collaborative and engaging learning environment, DepEd aims to support both students and teachers in their journey toward academic excellence. As the camp kicks off on July 1, it brings hope and opportunity for a brighter future in Philippine education.
